Alan Snider

Lieutenant Alan Snider of Number 12 Fire Station collapsed while fighting a fire in a vacant house on Carling Avenue at Edgeworth Avenue on March 3,1968. He was rushed to hospital where he died on March 6, 1968. His death was attributed to a heart attack and his body rests at Pinecrest Cemetery..

Alan had been a member of the Nepean Fire Department since 1941 prior to an annexation in 1950 he had held the rank of Deputy Fire Chief with the Nepean Department.

The Snider family has a rich tradition with the fire services in the Ottawa area. Alan’s brother Harry was the Fire Chief of Nepean, Harry’s son Roy was an Executive Chief with the Ottawa force and his brother Charlie was Chief of the West Carleton Department.. Alan’s son James was with the Nepean Fire Department and became Chief of the Kanata Department. He died suddenly in 1984. Alan Snider’s two grandsons joined the Kanata Department and are now members of the Ottawa Fire Service. The Snider family has a record of dedicated service to the residents of Ottawa Carleton.
