George Andrew Rawlings

Andy was born June 28, 1944. He had wanted to join the fire fighters at a young age and excelled in every exam quickly working his way up the ranks.

Andy helped bring about change by lobbying for fiberglass tanks as opposed to the heavier steel. He always had a project on the go. From restoring cars, sketching pictures to building his dream home, he mastered everything he did.

Andy loved all aspects of fire fighting from cooking for everybody in the station to playing trumpet in the band.

December of 1997 Andy was hospitalized with cancer due to years of breathing in toxic fumes. It was said that he would not make it through to the new year, but with a last show of strength he made it home for one last Christmas. Andy passed away March 2nd 1998.

Even 20 years after his passing there are still stories of respect and his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone who asks, all with a touch of humor.

March 2nd 2008 is the 20th anniversary of his passing, and it is a fitting memorial to be honored on the Ottawa Fire Fighters Monument.
