Ovila Lachance

While overhauling a fire on St Patrick Street on August 6, 1898 fire fighter Ovila Lachance stepped on a nail which ran up through his foot.

Although the injury was not thought to be of a serious nature fire fighter Lachance developed lockjaw.

He succumbed to the injury ten days later.

Tetanus was a very serious danger back in those days and preventative measures were not taken.
