Maurice
Grenon
Maurice Grenon died of an acute pulmonary edema caused at least in part by the inhalation of toxic fumes. District Chief Maurice Grenon responded to an explosion in a laboratory at Ottawa University in August with Number Three Unit. On arrival on the second floor they were requested by a Doctor to try and retrieve the hands of a lab technician who was being treated outside in the hallway. The Doctor felt that there was a chance to reattach the lost hands. It was unknown at the time what chemicals had been released. The fire was extinguished with extinguishers so as not to mix other chemicals and the building was ventilated. District Chief Grenon felt completely drained physically and went to see his Doctor after the incident. He was sent for a treadmill test and while performing the test he died on the treadmill.
An appeal with the Workers Compensation Board ruled that the fire was a definite factor in the death of District Chief Grenon.
Maurice Grenon was born March 3, 1933 and joined the Ottawa Fire Department on July 2, 1953. He died September 13, 1982. Maurice taught fire science at Algonquin College
He was married and had two daughters.
